Rupert Sanderson spills on THOSE Karl Lagerfeld shoes

18 March 2009

Rupert Sanderson's having a bit of a moment right now. Named the British Fashion Council's Accessory Designer of the Year last November, we weren't exactly surprised that Karl Lagerfeld snapped him up to design the shoes for his A/W '09 collection. But we do think the story behind their collaboration will become something of a fashion myth in years to come: Karl spotted Rupert's Piccadilly shoes on a well-clad Parisian and simply had to have them! But unsurprisingly, Karl's got very exact tastes – and what Karl wants, Karl gets… When we caught up with the designer he told us Karl had initially said he wanted the shoes embellished and in different colours, then changed his mind and asked Rupert to pare them down so they were almost identical to their original form – other than the little battle axe. In the end there were so many versions even Rupert didn't know which shoes had been chosen to walk down the runway until the day of the show. Backstage though, there was a miniature homage to Rupert. ‘The team adapted the chorus of the Kaiser Chiefs song Ruby that blared out 'Rupy! Rupy! Rupy!' Rupert's now back in London and working on S/S '10 already – ‘fashion never stops!' But in the meantime, he hints we can expect ‘geometric heels, exotic skins and a play with colour' from his shoes for A/W '09. Not that he'd be buying them. ‘My guilty fashion secret? I don't like shopping...!' We'll do that for you then, Rupert...
