So who won the front-row race?

17 March 2009

Phew. So now we're feeling fully recovered from fashion month, it's time to deal with the details. No, we don't mean the trends, silly – we've got a whole six months to come to terms with them, after all, haven't we? We mean taking some time out to tot up the A-list talent crammed on to the front row. So in the name of fashion, we spent the last 24 hours researching who officially made the most appearances in each capital. (It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.) Here are the results...

NY FROW Queen: Rachel Zoe
Show Count: 8
There were some unusual faces on the FROW this New York Fashion Week – White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, say, scouting on behalf of Michelle Obama. But there could only be one winner in terms of sheer dedication to the fashion cause: A-list stylist Rachel Zoe, who clocked up eight front-row appearances. Something to do with filming the second series of her cult reality TV show, perhaps?

LFW FROW King: Kanye West
Show Count: 9
As the fash pack moved on to London, the 'It' Brits you'd have expected to frequent the front row had abandoned their seats for the catwalk. So, although Daisy, Peaches, Pixie and co put their bums on some seats and the Miller sisters' Twenty8Twelve debut pulled in the crowds, this London Fashion Week might as well have been known as 'the one that Kanye West crashed'. The rapper and sometime Louis Vuitton-collaborator attended a whopping nine shows in the capital this season, with girlfriend Amber Rose in tow, and a seriously bad case of PDA to boot...

MILAN FROW Queens: Amber Le Bon and Freida Pinto
Show Count: 1 each
Yes, we know one show hardly counts as a front row romp. But Milan FW was a relatively sombre affair compared to last season's glitz and glamour (the Dolce & Gabbana FROW aside). So we're nominating fashwan newbies Amber Le Bon and Freida Pinto as our Milanese FROW Queens, since the A/W season saw them both attending their very first fashion shows: Amber at Moschino Cheap & Chic, and Freida at Dolce & Gabbana. After all, one of these girls is bound to make it to the top spot next time round...

PARIS FROW Queen: Milla Jovovich
Show Count: 8
Kate Moss
might have caused the most excitement at Paris Fashion Week – followed swiftly by newlyweds Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault making their first public appearance through the numerous Arrondisements – but it wouldn't be the French fashion capital unless a supermodel won the front-row race. Step forward the inimitably stylish model and actress Milla Jovovich, who was seriously riding the fashion wave with appearances at Chanel, Christian Dior, Miu Miu, Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano among others.

Overall winner: A/W '09
And we're left with a very strange conclusion. Forget supers or stylists, because the overall winner of the front-row race this A/W '09 season is none other than College Dropout Mr Kanye West. And given that word on the street is he's after a hot little fashion internship of his own, could he be guilty of some seriously unashamed FROW Gold Digging? Let's hope so. In the meantime, all that's left to ponder is where on earth last year's FROW winner Roisin Murphy was hiding? We missed you!
