Since POP magazine's former editor-in-chief, Katie Grand, left the helm last year, there have been rumours afoot of who could step in and take POP to the next level and through the next decade. Names of old-school editors, creative directors and even pop stars and fashion designers were thrown around. There was even talk that there could be spies in the building, hanging out in the POP lifts to check out interesting visitors.
Well the wait is over. We can reveal that Dasha Zhukova is the new POP editor-in-chief. ‘I am tremendously excited to take on this challenge,' Dasha said. ‘I feel it's the perfect time to be showcasing and encouraging new energy and talent. I have always admired POP for its visual vibrancy. Extending its remit for a new era is a stimulating project for myself and the new team. We are working hard on a complete revamp of the magazine in order to provide a broader point of view focusing also on art, contemporary culture and the globalisation of all things pop-related.'
Dasha, 27, is a brave but brilliant choice as the Russian has been involved in successful fashion and design fields, including cult fashion brand Kova & T, and is also influential and highly respected in the art world, as founder of The Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture. Working in partnership with editorial director Ashley Heath (who conceived and co-launched POP in 1999/2000), she will be responsible for reinventing POP, as well as the launch of a new website, a new London office, an installation space in Berlin and a partnership with The Saatchi Gallery in London.
While we wait to hear the full editorial line-up – Dasha and Ashley together interviewed each member of the new team – there is an editorial board already in place helping provide inspiration. It includes fashion icon Daphne Guinness; artist and film director Sam Taylor-Wood; art director Julia Restoin Roitfeld; design critic Alice Rawsthorn; artist and art director Peter Saville; Rebecca Wilson, head of development at Saatchi Gallery and editor of www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk; and David Davies, MD of POP.
The first issue under the new team will be launched on 1 September 2009, with the cover price of £5. But, as you'd expect, in the meantime we'll be bringing you every bit of POP news as it comes through first...
