When we went to see Richard Nicoll at his Shoreditch studio two weeks ago, we knew today's show was going to be a blinder. And it was! Inspired by transparent Peeping Tom macs; the garb worn by saucy readers wives, corsetry, lingerie details and the gentle pinks and creams worn by young ballerinas.
We caught up with Richard before the show to have a sneak preview and to find out what has been inspiring him for A/W '09. "The inspiration for this collection is the artist Linder Sterling. She came to borrow an outfit for an event about eight months ago. We just kinda hit it off, and became friends. Her work is post punk feminist collage. Her most famous piece is the sleeve art for the album "Orgasm Addict" by the Buzzoccks which hangs at Tate Britain. She works in an interesting way. He has used her work as prints. "The image I've used has an almost readers wives aspect ! There are a lot of see through macs, cardigans draped under the breast in the soft porn style, and its merged with the utilitarian lingerie. Where fashion over last seasons has been about aggression, armour, shielding the body, this is about fragility -I'm doing vulnerable."
Richard Nicoll Moments:
* Alexa Chung furiously scribbling away on the FROW - is fashion journo her next career move?
* The finale soundtrack was Morrisey's This Charming Man (I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear). We hear that he is a good friend of the artist, Linder, who inspired the collection.
FIVE THINGS WE LOVED:
Corset jumpsuit - look at the detailing! Amazing. Plus, who knew cream opaque tights could look so good!
The final full length print dress
Tunic dress with matching slim trousers
The trousers with mesh panels and lacing at the ankles
The collarless cream coat
