Matthew Williamson’s family affair

17 February 2009

Matthew Williamson is deep in New York Fashion Week mentalness, backstage preparing for his show as we type – apparently, they're calling it futuristic heirlooms as the collection is full of graphic prints mixed with lashes of luxury (curve shapes, wrap dresses and fur). But it was a different story this weekend as the Brit designer celebrated the opening of his first flagship store in New York’s Meatpacking District. Considering he'd just finished a model casting, Matthew was supremely chilled, sipping a pink Veuve Clicquot (to match the pink lights, natch) and chatting to Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Zoe, Mischa Barton and Heidi Klum. Li.Lo got so excited by the VIP changing room – a blue ‘disco' room that features an amazing light sculpture – she couldn't resist rifling through the shelves and trying on that coral pop dress (the one that half the A-list seem to have worn). But it was Matthew's extended family, jetting into New York specially to support him this week, who caused the biggest stir. His mum, dad, sister Andrea and niece and nephew held court around the British designer and showed off their special Matthew Williamson creations. His niece was wearing a one-off rose-tulle dress featuring chandelier mosaics that had been inspired by one of the S/S '09 looks (below). Lucky thing! No doubt she'll be watching his show – set to start in the next five minutes – with extra-special attention to see what she can ask for this season. As will we! More from the show soon...
