Jason Wu channels Mrs O

16 February 2009

She may not have actually graced the front row with her presence, but Michelle Obama's fashion presence was certainly felt at Jason Wu's New York Fashion Week show on Saturday. Less than a month after he scooped the coveted prize of dressing Mrs O for the Inauguration Ball, the designer's show was the hottest ticket in town. Elle sent six editors, Anna Wintour stormed backstage for a sneak preview of the collection (well Michelle did wear Wu on her US Vogue cover) and Jourdan Dunn opened the show in what some saw as a not-so-subtle nod to his new star supporter. But it was on the catwalk her presence was most felt. Although Wu's never actually met the First Lady, the ethereally soft fabrics and swathes of chiffon that ran throughout his collection were reminiscent of her Inaugural attire. Layered fringing, embroidered paillettes and diaphanous silhouettes also played a major role, and it wasn't hard to see the influence of Arthur Rackham – the Alice In Wonderland illustrator whom Wu frequently cites as an inspiration – on each and every look that came gliding down the runway. We wonder if Michelle was logging on over the weekend to pick her next Jason Wu outfit...
