LFW sneak preview: Betty Jackson

13 February 2009

We visit Betty in her hip-as-heck west London studio that's right next door to an MOT garage round the back of Shepherd's Bush!

A/W '09 INSPIRATIONS: 'Well, I'm thinking of the Betty Jackson A/W '09 girl as a young Princess Margaret who is fed-up in Mustique,' says Betty. 'The inspiration came from a picture by Edward Steichen. And there's Michelle Obama. Don't we love her? Also, strong shoulders, and the late 1930s...  The colours I'm into are things that smell and taste delicious, like truffle and apricot. Also lots of jumpsuits, and a touch of austerity – which is prevalent – it's the Northern in me I think.'

A/W '09 FASHION PHILOSOPHY: 'It's not a Creativity Crunch is it? It's a credit crunch. And we're feeling good. Our S/S '09 collection, which just hit the shops, is doing really well. We're selling simple, elegant pieces. I'm thinking about how to solve, how to do better and inspire. But I do believe that in a recession everybody should have a nice white shirt – I'm majorly into white shirts – especially the one with dolman sleeves, and I'm partial to elegant loose dresses in off-acid shades...'

THE MOOD BOARD: 'When I look at my mood board I see ideas, like the pleated turban, and the square polka effect, but the show is not turning out like this – it's lighter, more fun. I love how we're mixing hard and soft textures. Odd bits of stuff that we love, shape and detail. I can't look at any of this and actually say that is my collection...'

GRAZIA LOVES: The backless jumpsuit and pale coffee-coloured sheepskin bolero. Superluxe!

See you after the show!
