When it was first discovered that London Fashion Week will be in full swing the night the Oscars take place in LA – Sunday 22 February – nobody in the British fashion firmament thought twice about this date clash. (Well, other than the all-night frock watchers, we guess.) It certainly wasn't a problem for designer Nicole Farhi. She happily took a Sunday 22 February slot for her LFW show but, when the Oscar nominations were announced last month, it suddenly mattered a lot. Her husband, the playwright David Hare, had been nominated for an Adapted Screenplay Oscar for his work on The Reader. Farhi immediately got on the phone to the British Fashion Council. ‘We tried to change the slot,' says the French-born designer. ‘We thought about moving it to the Saturday and me running from backstage with my suitcase.' But it was not to be. Flight times meant she still wouldn't have arrived in time for the ceremony. ‘So, in the end, I decided to stay,' she says with a Gallic shrug. ‘Yes, I am very sad, but David will be with Kate Winslet and his other friends from The Reader, so he will be OK. And he promised to call me as soon as he has news.' That will be one long day for the designer – the call, when it comes, will be at around 3am.
