LFW sneak preview: Graeme Black's show inspiration

06 February 2009

Just managed to catch up with Graeme Black before he and his team make final frantic preparations for the A/W ‘09 collection show on the 21 February. The save-the-date cards have already gone out and the fashion world is a-twitter with stories of Mr Black bucking the crunch with a blow-out at Spencer House. ‘Oh, I thought everyone needed something to smile about right now,' he said. ‘It's an incredible place. Even the backstage area is over the top. It's the Palm Room. It used to be where the gentlemen retired for cigars after grand dinners and we are using it for hair and make-up. How mad is that?' The collection promises to be a welcome shot of Graeme Black's characteristically understated luxury. ‘I got my ideas for this after a trip to a gem exhibition at the Natural History Museum. I loved the way uncut stones were all rough on the outside and so smooth and glossy on the inside. So I am working on lots of cocoon shapes in very simple but tactile fabrics with lovely surprises inside, like crystal embroidered linings.' Mmmmm... Can't wait!
