Mrs O sparks £350,000 jewellery trend

We expected Michelle Obama's Inauguration outfits would spark some serious fashion stampedes - and up the designers' Google rankings by millions - but now we can put an actual price on the First Lady's fashion trendsetting status. When Mrs O chose to accessorise for the ball with some serious rocks from LA-based jeweller Loree Rodkin, demand for the 61 carat diamond earrings, 13 carat ring and 13 carat white-gold bangles went through the roof. But although she insists that the jewellery Michelle wore with her gown was custom-made and one-of-a-kind, Loree has taken over 100 orders for similar pieces from retailers and private clients. Which means, considering the label's jewellery usually retails for between $20,000 and $500,000, that this is one seriously bling-tastic trend... [Wall Street Journal]
