Is Pugh about to be tapped by Dior?

26 January 2009

Last night in Paris, Gareth Pugh sent the gossips into overdrive at his debut menswear show. The Sunderland-born London-based designer, 27, is fast making a name for himself as the most avant-garde young designer around. He has scooped the prestigious ANDAM fashion prize, worth 150,000 euros, and moved his catwalk showings for women to Paris from London. So, now firmly established as an international enfant terrible of London (we needed another one!), yesterday evening was the turn of Pugh's menswear. The oil-slick black and dirty silver furturistic robo-chic looks he put together would be perfectly at home in a 21st-century fashion vampire flick (and we mean that in a good way). That, and an audience that included Kanye West and Daphne Guinness, ensures Pugh has an excellent chance to break into the menswear industry –even in a recession! But most intriguing of all was the front-row presence of Delphine Arnault, the whip-smart daughter of LVMH head honcho Bernard Arnault – she's  the second biggest shareholder of LVMH with 7.5%. Her presence set industry tongues wagging, not least because it was a cold rainy Sunday night well after 9pm and she's a woman not known for staying out late. What is the billionaire director at LVMH doing out so late on a Sunday evening? We hear from several sources it's a sign Pugh's about to be tapped up as a consultant at Dior Homme. Quite what Dior Homme's current designer, Kris van Assche will say about that is anyone's guess...
