The fashion chat: Hussein Chalayan talks us through his exhibition

23 January 2009

London's Design Museum is hosting a fun, provocative and rather inspiring exhibition called Hussein Chalayan - From Fashion and Back. It has been created in association with Puma, for whom Chalayan is creative director of sport fashion. What's exciting about this exhibition is that it charts Hussein's most awe-inspiring catwalk innovations. We're talking the jaw-dropping moments that until now only fashion editors and buyers got to see when they went to his catwalk shows. There's the hats that turn into dresses; the skirt that becomes a table – seriously! – and a dress that electronically converts from one shape to another. And plenty more technology and fashion experimentation where that came from, too. Our personal favourites are the beautiful 3-D dresses of starchy baby pink and baby blue tulle that look like sculpture. Talent like his is truly rare and this exhibition is a must-visit. We can safely say that Hussein Chalayan is, at just 38, up there with the fashion greats. We popped down to the Design Museum earlier to catch up with Hussein, and took time to experience the show.

The exhibition is on until 17 May.
