Michelle Obama champions another under-the-radar designer

22 January 2009

We've said it before and we'll probably say it again (and again). Mrs O is totally living up to her title as the new First Lady of fashion. On her first official day in the role yesterday Michelle attended a prayer service at Washington National Cathedral, wearing yet another under-the-radar American designer to showcase her fashion nous. This time it was a vibrant green, silver and violet number by Tracy Feith, purchased from soon-to-be legendary Chicago store Ikram on the advice of its owner Ikram Goldman. Feith, like Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu before him, only discovered Michelle was wearing his creation when he spied her on television. ‘It was a real thrill for us in our little-engine-that-could company to see our First Lady in Tracy's dress and to receive such quick recognition,' said Tracy's partner, Susan Winget. ‘We are beyond flattered.' Tracy also reveals Michelle has her own, very strong-willed sense of style. ‘She likes things that are feminine but somewhat adventurous,' he said. ‘She's not afraid of those things. She's not letting people just make suggestions. She's like the Jackie O of our time.' So is this be the start of a new working relationship? Well we know there's at least one other Tracy Feith creation Michelle has hanging in her wardrobe – a dress she spied at Ikram that needed the length altered to suit her style. Let the Michelle Obama dress watch continue... [WWD]

Oh and if you want to hear more from Michelle's new fashion crush du jour, check out this crazy little video of Tracy talking surfing. Random we know, but we thought it might entertain you whilst sipping your morning coffee – and waiting for the next Mrs O appearance!
