Obama kids wear high street

21 January 2009

What a day it was for seven-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia Obama. The girls took pictures of their dad being sworn in as President, giggled with their mum in the crowd during his speech - and emerged as new fashion icons. Yep, you heard that right. They might only be seven and 10 (Sasha's so small she even had to stand on a box for the family portrait), but the colour-pop outfits the girls were wearing have already been proudly claimed by US high-street giant J Crew. ‘Malia featured a deep periwinkle blue coat, while her equally chic sister wore a deep coral dress under her sweet guava coat, vivid orange scarf and glove set, each tied with a velvet ribbon belt around the waist,' read a press release from the store sent within minutes of the pictures flashing around the world. And while we do adore the chic but age-appropriate outfits - not to mention the fact that Michelle, also a J Crew devotee, dresses her kids in good-value high street brands - we're not sure how we feel about pre-teen girls becoming style icons. Thank goodness Michelle and Barack put the girls to bed before the Inauguration Balls. Otherwise we might have their designer dresses causing a fashion stampede, as they did on election night. Stick to whizzing down the White House banisters in Bush-twins style, we say. Way more fun...
