Perhaps it's our current obsession with thrift, customization and regeneration. Or perhaps we still haven't got over our love affair with 80s-style ripped denim. Whatever its origin, one S/S09 trend that's set to stride confidently off the catwalk and onto the street is "urban archaeology," marked by the mixture of past-season, worn-out clothes and bold ultra-modern styles. Sharon Graubard, vice president and creative director at retail consultancy ESP Trendlab, identified this trend in Miu Miu's Spring 2009 looks, and says, "There's a kind of wistfulness about it and appreciation of the past."
This sounds like a fabulous excuse to wear all our favourite items from the past two decades up to, like, tomorrow. So plunder the back of your wardrobe for those tattered 80s pieces you haven't had the heart to throw away, scour charity shops and clothes-swapping parties for Levi denim jackets, and give them new life with a an of-the-moment touch like leather strides or tartan. Voila. [Wall Street Journal]
