Fashion gets political

14 January 2009

In just one week Barack Obama will become President Obama, the 44th president of the United States. America is abuzz in preparation for the inauguration ceremony and ball on Tuesday, including the fashion industry, who have thrown their full (but beautifully dressed) weight behind the ‘Yes you can' man.

More than 10 well known US designers have created official merchandise to support the celebrations as part of ‘Runway to Change.' Diane von Furstenburg, Zac Posen, Donna Karan, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang and Narciso Rodriguez are among those who have created bags, t-shirts or scarves each honouring Obama.

Donna Karan's tee is emblazoned with the words ‘Inspire Change', while the DVF tote features a heart, the word Obama and buzz words like ‘passion' and ‘intelligence' - guess DVF is quite taken with him then.

Proceeds from the sales of the collectables will support the cost of inauguration and will be available at pic2009.inauguralcollectibles.com through February.
