Project Catwalk winner takes on London Fashion Week

default

As we struggle to come to terms with the end of X Factor (what will we do on Saturday nights now?) and happily hum Alexandra's Hallelujah our thoughts turned to the forgotten winners of other reality TV shows - especially our favourite, Project Catwalk's Jasper Garvida. Remember the Canadian designer whose beautifully crafted final collection full of sequins and glass made it virtually impossible for him not to win the Sky One show back in March? So we decided to catch up with him for five minutes to find out how winning the UK's only fashion reality TV has helped his career. And exciting news! He's got London Fashion Week firmly in his sights.

‘I launched my own company last September and have been so busy,' he told us. ‘I did apply for London Fashion Week in February but just couldn't afford to put on a catwalk show, so I'm exhibiting at On/Off instead. If I impress the buyers there I'll be opening a studio and doing a show at London Fashion Week in September. So I'm very, very nervous about February!' So what's in store for the fash pack? Well, Jasper tells us his On/Off collection will incorporate between 45 and 60 womenswear pieces, focusing on tailoring, and inspired by the robot in 1920s silent film Metropolis. ‘The robot was my muse. I actually first saw the film in the video for Queen's Radio GaGa video and loved it! My other point of references is the sculptures of Italian artist Berto Lardera - the whole collection will be very deco and futuristic with lots of angular shapes and a patriotic but mechanical colour palette - red, white and blur with tarnished metals.'

The exposure to the fashion world Jasper feels he received on Project Catwalk, means he was sad to hear the fashion reality TV show has been cancelled for next year. ‘It was such a great opportunity for designers like me - a chance to get your name out there, to showcase your work to a mainstream audience, even if your work isn't that mainstream.' In fact, his debut collection from the show was working into a range for Oli.co.uk and you can still buy it on their website today. We say, get it quick. Something tells us Jasper's a hot name to watch for Fashion Weeks 2009...
