Stephen Jones gets top gong at British Fashion Awards

default

At the 2008 BFA's milliner Stephen Jones - who creates fantastical hats for Dior, Giles, Marc Jacobs and Jaeger as well as for A-List clients and film - received the Outstanding Achievement Award. With this, Jones joins an elite club that counts Vivienne Westwood, Suzy Menkes and Mrs Burstein of Browns and officially makes him a British fashion great! There's nothing Stephen can't do (and hasn't done with hats) from outrageous headdresses to jaunty fedoras and club-kid cool slouchy hats plus everything in between. Dita von Teese collects his signature mini top hats.  Madonna and Christina Aguilera are loyal customers. He also did the hats for the movies Elizabeth and Atonement and is currently working on hats for the Chanel film starring Audrey Tautou. 'Hats are about who you want to be,' he told Grazia this week. 'It's about that dream. If you've got an extravagant costume dress it will look too much on. A dramatic costume hat though, can look wonderful. Hats are about novelty - a crazy thing for a party. Winning this makes me think of something my mum, who is 90, told me when I turned 50 last year. "I remember being 50," she said. "I thought I knew it all, but I knew nothing. Life had hardly begun." And that's how I feel about my career now.'
