Luella Bartley, the rebel journalist turned designer who mixes up classic Brit style every season to bring you English eccentricity in its subvertedly hip form, has scooped Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards 2008. A Central St Martin's alumni Luella previously worked at the Evening Standard and Vogue but then changed her fashion path and making her cheeky catwalk debut back in 2000 with a collection she entitled "Daddy I Want a Pony." She subsequently won ‘Young Designer of the Year' at the Elle awards. After seven years showing in New York, we were more than happy to see Luella and her quirky punk-chic style return to Britain following the birth of her third child with super-snappper partner David Sims. Since then collection after collection has been excitedly lapped up by both the fash pack and front row fashionistas - and her work has. You may remember Lily Allen et al channelling the Luella witchy look at her show, complete with gothic dresses and black lippy at the AW08 show? As a go-to for leading key trends, she's famed for her perfect party dresses (the prom shape is particularly key), colourful prints and show stopping accessories, so it's no wonder she has such a fan club - Roisin Murphy, Kate Moss, Kelly Osbourne and Alexa Chung to name but a few.
