John Galliano’s Pearly-King outfit explained

19 November 2008

Ever since we saw John Galliano step out onto the red carpet at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards wearing a pearl-encrusted suit and daisy hat we've been dying to know the back-story. Was it a subtle reference to his S/S '09 menswear show which featured many a pearl? Or was there something more significant going on? Turns out the designer was wearing an outfit inspired by Victorian costermongers - London trades-people who covered their suits with mother-of-pearl buttons. And it certainly had high-profile fans. ‘I love it,' Anna Wintour said. ‘It's fabulous, fun and optimistic.' But if you thought THAT was a daring Galliano outfit, we love the sound of this one too. The designer revealed he was lounging in his pajamas with dreadlocks and bright red nail polish when receiving a summons to meet LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton chief Bernard Arnault. ‘I was trembling like a leaf and all I could think was, "What a day to have this colour nail polish on..."). Genius, Galliano! [WWD]
