Another day, another press day - where we get to check out the Spring stock hitting the shops soon. This time we were at Matches meeting the new designer of their label Freda, Nargess Gharani (formerly one half of Gharani Strok), and chatting to owner Tom Chapman about the credit crunch (what else?) and how it's affected him. Handbag sales have steadied apparently but the most surprising thing he'd noticed was shoe sales going through the roof. ‘It's less about the classic styles now,' he told us. ‘Women just cannot get enough of killer, extreme heels. If it's crazy and it's colourful it flies out of the store...' So there you have it. Forget hemlines. The new measure of a recession is how high - and how extreme - your heels can go. So judging by the S/S '09 shows looks like we're in for a rough ride...
Recession shoe sales get extreme!
