Phoebe Philo confirmed as creative director of Celine

Stop Press! It's been rumoured for some time, but now it's true! Phoebe Philo, the Brit girl designer who made Chloé the label of the moment - and kept it the label of the moment for FIVE YEARS - has been appointed creative director of French fashion house Celine by LVMH head honcho Bernard Arnault. Its current designer Ivana Omazic will present her S/S '09 collection as planned in Paris next month. This appointment is good news for anyone who misses Phoebe's stellar design work - she resigned from Chloé back in January 2006, after all.  (Although there was an unconfirmed rumour that she has designed secretly for the Gap European range for the last year). Whatever, that's a long time for us to be without her signature feminine-yet-hip clothes, bags and shoes that always made us feel like we were living in a cross between a Flake advert and the pages of a glossy magazine. And, of course, they fitted seamlessly into our everyday life, too. Phoebe Philo will start at Celine in October, presenting her first collection next March for A/W '09 with a runway debut seven months later. This means we will have to wait a whole year to see a Phoebe Philo collection on the catwalk, and a whole year to buy something from Phoebe in the shops again. Grrr. But, still, just as long as she brings her old magic to the increasingly sidelined Celine. We can only wait....
