'The backstage is luxury at Chanel, it's wonderful.' So said Sam McKnight and we have to agree. Grazia Daily bagged an all-access pass to the most high-profile show on the Paris Fashion Week calendar as part of #Grazia360 with a mission to bring you the action from every angle. And that's exactly what we did! Pre-show Cara Delevingne dished on her 'fashion dad' and post-show Karl Lagerfeld opened up about art, but there was tons lots of behind-the-scenes action in-between. So for all the backstage secrets from the Spring Summer 2014 show, keep scrolling…
1. A Wig-tastic Show Does Not Make Things Easier
A frequent backstage drama is brushing out a model's elaborate hair-do from her previous show so when we saw a pile of wigs at Chanel, we wondered whether this would make things a tad speedier. But no. 'We've had to do 80 wigs in the last two days and they've all had to be cut and we've added extensions so it's been a lot of work,' hair guru Sam McKnight explained. 'It's easier today to fit them but there's a lot of prep beforehand.' Blimey!
2. Cara Delevingne Sees Karl As Her 'Fashion Dad'
We found the mighty-browed beauty jumping for joy pre-show thanks to a pair of sunnies Karl had just given her. 'He's so lovely and he's such an interesting man. I could sit and talk to Karl for hooours,' Cara told us. Stay tuned for the full interview coming soon.
3. Each Model Gets A Chanel Goodie Bag
How jeals were we when we spotted handfuls of Chanel bags being dished out? Answer: very. Ever generous, King Karl treats his catwalkers to a hoard of luxe cosmetics, including hand cream and makeup. Can we have one too please? Oh.
4. Peter Philips Created Arty Makeup For EIGHTY Models
The biggest challenge over in camp beauty? 'We have nearly 80 girls to work on within a tight time frame,' said a surprisingly calm Peter Philips. The makeup artist barely moved for almost three hours as girl after girl queued up to get beautified with splashes of colour. 'Karl showed me a sample from a paint factory with strokes of colours,' Philips said of the inspiration. 'Then he saw my finger painting and said, "let's play with that". So I created a black base with big eyeliner and eyebrows to give a haughty expression like a woman in the '60s going to an art gallery and looking very intellectual'.
5. Chanel Catering Is The Best In The World
We've nibbled on many a backstage bite during the fashion week marathon but this topped them all. Quelle surprise! There was dreamy pots of coffee, bowls of juicy strawberries, fruit, yogurts and of course pain au chocolat. And the models tucked in too with the likes of Sam Rollinson and Joan Smalls snacking on the chicest crumpets we ever did see.
6. The Catwalk Was A Veritable Art Attack
The walls of the entire Grand Palais were painted optic white for the occasion and hung with monumental paintings, sculptures and installations. Huge canvasses were covered in Chanel's iconic numbers - 5, 19, 22, 31 - and the legendary Rue Cambon studio door was stamped with the words MADEMOISELLE PRIVE as it still is today. Is this Karl's way of telling the world that his collections are art? 'It's just superficial. I'm a very superficial person,' the Kaiser tells us. He's joking (we think).
7. Karl Lagerfeld Designed Every Installation
'I designed small models and they made them bigger,' the house's magical creative director told us. 'There's no young artist walking around doing it for me!' Is there Perish the thought, Karl! But what was the verdict from his most beloved companion? 'Choupette was happy so everything was okay'. Phewf.
8. They Made Perfect Posing Material
The fash-pack, including Katy Perry, couldn't resist striking a pose in front of the ginormous Chanel bags and larger-than-life fragrance bottles for a cheeky Instagram shot. Naturallement, we had a go too.
9. Caroline Sieber Worked With Karl On Her Wedding Dress
It's every girl's dream to have the head honcho at Chanel create your wedding dress, non? Well, that's exactly what happened to Ms Sieber when she told Lagerfeld about her engagement. 'He offered to design it and I loved every moment of the process,' the lovely lady told us. 'It was incredible working with the haute couture studio which is a completely new universe; it was very different from anything I've ever experienced before. I wish I could do it all over again.' At least she has those dreamy pictures to look at again and again and again...
10. Meet Stacy Martin, The New Member Of Karl's Crew
Katy Perry and Rita Ora popped up at the show, Caroline Sieber and Vanessa Paradis are Chanel veterans, but there's a new lady on the FROW. Ladies and gents, meet Stacy Martin. Stacy has all the credentials for a Chanel muse: impossibly glossy locks, porcelain skin and an impeccable sense of style.
