There was one lady who stole the New York Fashion Week spotlight yesterday: Victoria Beckham. Well, Victoria and Harper Beckham to be exact. The designer unveiled her Spring Summer 2014 collection and – as we may have mentioned – the Graziettes were granted an all-access pass as part of our Fashion Week 360 extravanganza. It meant we saw Edie Campbell preparing to open the show despite not walking in heels for the past month, hair maestro Guido creating super-sleek ponytails and, of course, Harper tottering about with Daddy David (we die).

As if that wasn’t excitement enough, Grazia Daily bagged a backstage chat with VB herself post-show. After cooing over our Senior Fashion Editor’s dress – which you, dear readers, voted for – Lady Becks filled us in on the thinking behind this season’s creations. She also cleared up a few rumours, including leaving England and designing costumes for a certain Fifty Shades of Grey movie. She also told us Harper loves football. You heard it here first, people! Stay tuned to watch our full backstage video, landing later today, and in the meantime, get a load of our interview with Victoria below…
Victoria on her Spring Summer 2014 collection
This season focuses a lot on shape, both visually and conceptually. There’s a boy meets attitude, as opposed to masculine which was last season. Trousers have been a big thing for me - it’s not easy to create a good pair of trousers and I really feel that I have done that. I really feel like there’s an ease about this collection as well, which is what I want to wear.
Victoria on how her designs reflect her emotions
People can really tell that this is me, I’m being very true to myself. I love that what we showed was very monochrome. There was lots of pops of colour as well and colour’s very important to me, but I was also very excited to show a lot of black and white. It’s a very strong graphic and like I said, a very girl meets boy attitude but with a feminine wave running throughout.
Victoria on her kids having an input
With Harper, she definitely has a point of view. If I’m going out for the night and I come downstairs, she’ll say, “Ooh, nice dress mummy” or “nice handbag mummy”. She’s very girlie, she’s very feminine, but at the same time she loves football. She loves to run around in football boots and a football shirt. She’s got three older brothers – she’s not one of these little girls who falls over and instantly cries because she’s used to it. She’s a little bit of rough and tumble in the garden with her brothers, which is really nice. But I love her coming to fashion week because she does have a very girlie side too. I wish the boys could come but they’ve just started back at school so that’s why they’re not here.

Victoria on balancing work and family
It’s great because David’s here and my parents are here and they’re fantastic at helping take care of Harper. It’s a juggling act when you’re a working mum and I have help so I’m very lucky, but I do feel guilty. It’s a busy time for everybody in the fashion industry. For the next month, a lot of journalists are away from their families.
Victoria on whether she really is ‘more suited to America’
A lot of times you say things and it gets taken out of context. I love England, I’m very proud to be English and my aesthetic is very English. That’s our home, all my family lives there so there are no plans to leave England. What I meant in that interview is that I love the American dream. I love the fact that anything is possible. I’m very ambitious and the sky’s the limit so it’s a very positive attitude. But I didn’t mean it exactly as it came across. I’m very patriotic so I’d say I’m a bit of both countries.
Victoria on designing the costumes for Fifty Shades of Grey
I haven’t read it, but obviously I’ve heard about it. And I know [the film’s director] Sam Taylor Wood – I saw her a few weeks ago in Los Angeles. I haven’t been asked. I heard that rumour as well, don’t believe rumours! If it’s true, I think it’s flattering when somebody likes what you do.

Victoria on opening a store in London
We launched ecommerce a while ago [victoriabeckham.com] and that’s doing incredibly well so I’m learning a lot about retail and definitely a stand alone store is the next step for me. I’m very excited. I think it will be great because people will be able to see the brand through my eyes, which I touch on with the ecomm site but for someone to actually come into my shop and see it all through my eyes is very exciting.
Victoria on how she celebrates after the show
We’re going to have some brunch with my family. I probably won’t talk very much! As much as people say they don’t care about the reviews, I do. I’ve put a lot of work in to this – my whole team have – so we’ll just wait for the reviews to come through and then I will go straight into more meetings for the rest of the day. We then have to go through the collection and decide what we’re going to sell because the collection is huge. We then have to narrow it down and come up with our selling campaign. Oh yeah, I’ll be up till really late tonight! It doesn’t finish here. There’s a lot more work to go on.
