Beauty Highlights From New York Fashion Week Day 1: Creatures Of The Wind, BCBG Maxazria, Ivana Helsinki & MORE

06 September 2013 by

You’ve already had a sneak-peak of what’s in our make-up bag for NYFW, but much more exciting is the beauty bonanza that’s going on behind-the-scenes at all the incredible shows over in the Big Apple. There are some pretty amazing looks out and about already, and it’s only day 1! Want to know what we’ve managed to spy so far backstage, despite thick clouds of hairspray and face powder!? Read on and learn girls, and get ready for some serious S/S 14 beauty…

1. Matte Orange Lips At Creatures Of The Wind

Creatures Of The Wind S/S 14 (NARS)

Team Grazia beauty were thrilled to see that the bold, matte, coral pout is showing no signs of fading for S/S 2014. This look was out in force at Creatures Of The Wind, where NARS make-up artist James Boehmer opted for a matte orange hue, and inspiration came from artist Eugene von Bruenchenhein and his psychedelic landscapes. Cool, huh? So, how did he get the look? After defining the lips with a burnt red pencil, make-up maestro Boehmer layered on NARS’ Timanfaya Satin Lip Pencil. Everything else was kept simple- a dusting of powder on the face and a pale, shimmery green shadow on the eyes completed the look. Oh, and take note- not a scrap of mascara or eyeliner.

2. Pretty Cornrows at Ivana Helsinki

Romantic cornrows were everywhere backstage at Ivana Helsinki (Sir John Instagram)

Over at uber cool Invana Helsinki, the good old cornrow was making a real statement, and Paola Suhonen, designer for the 15-year-old Finnish brand said her inspiration came from the classic American road trip. But this wasn’t the full-on, punky, half-shaved cornrow look you might expect- imagine a more romantic, feminine take on the boho plait and you’ve got it right here. In a S/S 2014 kind of way. You saw it here first, girls!

3. Polished Skin at Tanya Taylor

Tanya Taylor S/S 14 (NARS)

Backstage at Tanya Taylor, models had their skin polished to perfection by NARS make-up artist Uzo. The beauty legend told us, “This look is so refined and chic- beautiful, polished skin with luminous cheeks and a matte nude lip. The key to this look is really a sculpted and defined brow to give an air of sophistication.”  Alas, fear your lacklustre skin will never look quite this good? Simply arm yourself with NARS’ Optimal Brightening Concentrate, £50 and apply all over skin before applying Sheer Glow Foundation, £30.50. This is one gorgeous look we cannot wait to try out…

4. Loose Waves at BCBG Maxazria (and more luminous skin!)

There’s nothing more us beauty ladies love than a look anyone can wear. Which is why we were over the moon to spy some gorgeously tousled waves backstage at BCBG Maxazria. Spring is all about an easy, effortless ‘do, and this might just be the ultimate tousled look we’ve been waiting for. The man behind this hair magic? Laurent Philippon, lead stylist for Bumble and Bumble, who said he was striving for a cool, effortless, yet put-together look. Laurent looped sections of the girls’ hair around the barrel of an iron halfway at the top, middle and ends for an uber natural look. And for the make-up? Make-up guru Val Garland for Sephora Pro focused on an androgynous look that focused, yet again, on luminous skin. The secret? Garland used Marc Jacobs’ Beauty Perfection Powder Featherweight Foundation in a few shades darker than the models’ skin tone instead of a bronzer for the ultimate contoured look. We love!

5. Neon Baroque at Lulu Frost

A modern day Marie Antoinette? (Getty)

Last and by no means least were the stunning neon vibes going down at Lulu Frost. Cassandra Garcia for Bobbi Brown was the magic behind this glam, modern-day Marie Antoinette look, which focused on a pop of saturated colour on the lips using Bobbi Brown’s Electric Violet Rich Lip Colour (out in the spring). Teamed with a hint of colour in the corner of the eyes this is one uber glam look- a true punk princess, we say!

Keep posted for our day two beauty round-up... Coming soon!
