In the drizzly courtyard of Somerset House, safely sheltered by white walls and security guards with coffee, Natalie Massanet opened London Fashion Week. The chic New Yorker kindly reminded us of the 75f weather back in Manhattan, but celebrated our chance to wear the new season now in the UK. The sea of shoulder-robed cocoon coats, full wool skirts, chunky knits and squeaky new patent ankle boots suggested she read the mood perfectly.
It seems the Fash Pack acknowledged her call to arms in the Evening Standard last week, where she charmingly requested we Brits don our finest threads to support the city in one of its two most fashion-forward weeks of the year.
Street style and personal style blogs have been increasingly influential over the last seasons but fashion mogul Massanet's speech proves that it's going nowhere. Outside the venue, she explained, is a London Fashion Week 'InstaBooth' where the public can snap pics of themselves in their best outfits to instantly upload to the BFC's Facebook page. It's crystal clear that there is a runway life taking place outside the shows - particularly online.
Instead of drum-rolling our nation's hottest designers - that we all can't wait to see, Natalie raved about London Fashion Week's exciting new ventures and investments in education. She enthused about the fashion brains and visions of the future, the nurturing of which will come courtesy of the BFC's collaborations with major fashion players from 10 magazine's Sophia Neophitou and fashion critic-extrordinaire Sarah Mower to education sponsorships with Marks & Spencers - much more of which will be revealed over the weekend.
For now, Somerset House is bustling with excitement and umbrellas as the shows kick off. Stay tuned to Grazia's Fashion Week 360 channel and they'll be no need to risk the rain!
