New York is packed with glitz and gloss, and having spent a week in the Big Apple for Fashion Week, we’re ready to see what London’s design talent has to offer for Spring Summer 2014. LFW is guaranteed to offer up a mixture of innovative creations, some wacktacular, some genius and all totally unique because that’s what makes our capital so darn great *wipes patriotic tear from eye*
One man who certainly agrees is Giles Deacon. ‘The UK is very receptive to designers doing their own thing so London Fashion Week really stands out,’ the frock-maker noted when we met him at his studio last week. In fact, the creativeness of our capital reminds him of his student days at Central St. Martin’s.
‘There’s a healthy competitiveness between the London designers because we’re mates, but we all have individual aesthetics, from Christopher [Kane] to Jonathan [Saunders].’ It’s a dramatic contrast to other fashion weeks, says Giles, where ‘you see 18 collections that look like they’ve been designed by the same person. There’s a homogenous aesthetic, which is really dull to me.’
The UK is also brilliant at nurturing up-and-coming talent where young designers have the opportunity to make it big. ‘I’ve seen people starting ideas in their bedrooms and now have really great businesses,’ notes Giles. ‘There are so many options that it becomes much more than just fashion and more about design, which is really important. It’s what we do best.’
Mr Deacon, we couldn’t agree more. And let LFW begin!
