As part of our Fashion Week 360 coverage we had the pleasure of speaking to fashion photographer and cult blogger Yvan Rodic, aka Face Hunter. Rodic began Face Hunter back in 2006 after snapping pictures of people at glamorous events in his then home, Paris and the site has since grown a huge following making it one of the world's top street style blogs. It has also opened up opportunities for the man behind the camera to travel across the globe with commissions from the likes of Vogue Italy and The New York Times. We find out what a typical fashion month entails for him and what he thinks of London style…
Grazia Daily: How did you get into photography – did you have any formal training?
Face Hunter: No, I just picked it up.
Grazia Daily: What advice would you give to any budding photographers?
Face Hunter: They shouldn’t worry too much about the technical side of photography. It’s all about having an eye and practicing - you can pick up the technicalities quite easily as you go along. You should just practice and keep shooting. Experimenting is the best way to learn.
Grazia Daily:How much time do you spend working during Fashion Month?
Face Hunter: It’s definitely non-stop but I like that. I love what I do so I would rather be on the go.
Grazia Daily: What are you looking out for when you're street style spotting?
Face Hunter: I look for something unique; personality; I don’t look for trends. I search out that combination of beauty and originality with a hint of soul. I like photographs to have something different.
Grazia Daily: In what ways do you aim to be different from other street style blogs?
Face Hunter: Many of the top street style blogs focus on the top four fashion weeks. I think my approach is much broader than that. For me, it is important to discover style in diverse places; in Latin America, Iceland or Asia. My blog has a wider focus – not just capturing street style, but culture as well.
Grazia Daily: Which other street style blogs do you follow?
Face Hunter: The Sartorialist
Grazia Daily: Do you have particular fashion people who you are drawn to shoot time and time again?
Face Hunter: I’m not really attracted by celebrity style but I love the style of this Italian girl, who is the owner of this store in Turin. Her name is Eleonora Carisi, she is a blogger as well and takes photos of street style all around Italy.
Grazia Daily: Which is your favourite fashion week city and why?
Face Hunter: I like to shoot in Milan, New York and London because they are so diverse and always offer the unexpected. With regards to cities in general, I like Stockholm and Copenhagen because of the simplicity and edge of their street fashion. I’ve recently particularly enjoyed shooting in Sydney. Even though it is a less recognised style capital, I found a lot of cool people to photograph there.
Grazia Daily: As an experienced traveller – what are your top packing tips?
Face Hunter: It’s good to have clothes for all weathers. You never know what the weather’s going to do, particularly if you go from a warm to cold country. Bring an eye mask for the plane. It’s important to sleep on the journey to avoid jet lag. Also, always bring your swimwear!
Grazia Daily: How is London fashion different from elsewhere in the world?
Face Hunter: It’s playful. Londoners don’t take fashion too seriously. They want to experiment and try new things. They don’t necessarily care about how flattering or how beautiful an outfit is but more how fun and experimental it is - the art of it.
