From the minute we walked into the backstage area at the Mark Fast show on Saturday afternoon we knew one heck of a fierce beauty look was in the making. Black hair was strewn all across the floor (blame TIGI Global Creative Director Nick Irwin who spent hours cutting black wigs to shape each model’s face) and there was a serious gothic vibe over in the make-up department too as girls were adorned with petrol-esque, black-green lips- “Amazonian gothic warriors”, apparently. Team Grazia beauty watched on in wonder as Bare Minerals make-up artists worked their magic to create a stunning vampire lip and we just couldn’t wait to chat to lead make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom about her inspiration behind the look, her backstage beauty essentials and her top-tips for looking good throughout LFW. Read on and learn girls…

There were black gothic wigs everywhere! (@graziabeautyed)

Grazia Beauty: Hi SJ! We’re loving this vampire-esque, 90s-raver goth look. How much input do you have in terms of creating the specific looks?

Sarah-Jane Froom: In the lead-up to LFW Mark (Fast) and I have got together on numerous occasions in Soho and at his studio (we have drunk a lot of tea mulling over a mood board!) Mark is a great guy to work with- we look at his collection, discuss trends, what we feel would work, we mail ideas to each other and chat on the phone. Mark loves a bit of glamour with a dark edge, so we have played with a lot of options, colours and finishes until we got it down to a look that Mark felt would work well with his fabulous collection.

GB: What are the biggest beauty trends you’re most excited about for A/W?
SJ: The trends that I’m most excited about seeing are the amazing complexions, mixed with a playful nod to punk/gothic.  I’m loving the fact that it’s all about the perfect base, skin that looks like skin, this can actually take a lot of products and is a true art, using lots of different textures, formulas and shades to create something that looks incredibly natural and like you’re not wearing make-up. Just beautiful, glowing skin with amazing contours and highlights.

GB: Which new products are you excited to be using this LFW?

SJ: I am so excited about using our Frame & Define Brow Styler (just launched) to create structured strong brows, Lash Domination 10-in-1 Volumizing Mascara which is amazing and of course Marvellous Moxie Lipcolor in Lead The Way with Marvelous Moxie Lipliner in Electrified – very Goth!

GB: It’s pretty manic back here, SJ. What products do you rely on behind-the-scenes?

SJ: Definitely bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer to make skin ready and prepped for a flawless foundation application, bareMinerals SPF15 Original Foundation for perfect skin with the no make-up make up look, bareMinerals Frame & Define Brow Styler – for strong but natural looking brows and of course last but certainly not least – bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie in Lead The Way.

GB: Wow, that’s quite the kit! What are your top tips for keeping a fresh complexion over the course of a busy (and often sweaty) day?
SJ: It’s all in the prep, first of all bareMinerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum and Purely Nourishing Moisturiser, followed by Prime Time Foundation Primer, then just top this with a great foundation such as bareMinerals Original/READY or Matte, and then bareMinerals Touch Up Veil to keep shine away throughout the day!

GB: Sounds great. And what about the models- any tips you’ve picked up to keep them looking peachy and less-than-stressed?

SJ: A really good serum under lots and lots of moisturiser is the best thing for stressed-out model skin. Wear moisturiser like a mask in-between shows- this works wonders. Ideally, lots of rest and water, although no-one really gets rest during Fashion Week!

GB: What’s the thing you fear most happening backstage?

SJ: Models being late and us not having enough time to get the looks on! Make-up on the clothes is also a disaster but luckily Mark has an amazing team that are used to dressing the girls and holding all fabrics away from complexion to avoid this. I just want Mark to be happy!
