Last week saw the launch of School of Grazia’s latest event – our new straight-talking business networking series for women who want to get ahead. Taking place at uber-glam Sketch in London’s West End last Monday, the event saw more than 100 young ambitious women from all over the country gather to hear from two of the UK business world’s leading ladies – Shaa Wasmund and Nina Grunfeld. And what a night it was.
The evening started in the best possible way – with several cocktails and indulgent canapés, before the two women took to the stage to divulge their greatest tips, tricks and advice on making it big. Led by our very own Angela Buttolph, Grazia readers got the chance to grill Nina – an accomplished British writer and successful founder of self-help Life Clubs – and Shaa – the driving force behind business help network Smarta.com and esteemed author – on everything from starting out, to collaborating and getting the best out of your business online.
Informal, but oh-so informative, the evening was jam-packed full of advice – and plenty of laughs. The theme of our first event, inspired by Shaa’s book of the same name, was Stop Talking, Start Doing. And by the end of the night we were truly motivated to do just that.
“The first thing to do is to be more aware of who you are and what you like about your life,” Nina explained. “Until you know what you really like doing, it’s hard to do anything.
"If we're not doing something we love, we can end up procrastinating, by rebelling against ourselves. We'll find anything to put off doing what needs to be done. That's when you know that you need to do something you truly enjoy."
Shaa, who was named one of Management Today's 35 women under 35 in 2007, continued, “It's all too easy to get stuck in your comfort zone - we create a worst case scenario for what might happen if we start a business, leave our partner or make any kind of change and convince ourselves it's real. But it's not real - it's our minds playing tricks on us. We get stuck in this comfort zone, where things are safe - but, to grow, we need to push ourselves outside of it.
"Unless you want to be the exact same person, doing the exact same thing in five years' time, you have to push yourself. You have to create your own life. If you want to change things, you have to be the change you want to see. It’s as simple as that.”
If you missed out, don’t panic – just be sure to book your tickets for School of Grazia’s next event, on November 25.
