The facts are horrific: a staggering one in three women around the world will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. One in three.
Which is why a new campaign to end violence against women can’t come soon enough.
‘One Billion and Rising’ is a global movement, culminating in a series of events on February 14. And the aim is to get one billion people to take to the streets to dance, sing and shout for an end to violence against women and girls.
‘There’s growing violence in teenage relationships and too many women still face harassment and threats on the street and online’, says Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. ‘This must not continue.’
In London, thousands will be in Trafalgar Square from midday while events are also taking place across the UK.
‘It’s about men and women standing together’, adds Yvette Cooper. ‘It’s about opening people’s eyes to terrible abuse that no one should have to put up with.’
