Following the tragic events at the Boston Marathon yesterday we saw the drama unfold and emotion conveyed across social media as Bostonians, political leaders, stars and people around the world reached out to those directly affected. Alongside harrowing pictures of crowds covered in blood and angry comments from those trying to comprehend such a senseless act of violence were messages and prayers of support to victims and their families. Here we have rounded up some of those reactions, which took place in the hours after the two explosions...

1. Instagram reacts...

Stars including Beyonce, Chloe Moretz, Jamie Oliver and Katy Perry posted images on Instagram offering their sympathies. Actress Moretz wrote, "I don't know what this world is coming to" while British TV chef Oliver said, "Sending love and our thoughts to the city of Boston and anyone effected by the Bombs. Love Jamie x"

2. President Obama reacts...

President Obama delivered a statement from the Whitehouse and took to twitter to tell his country "Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss. On days like this there are no Republican or Democrats - we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens. All Americans stand with the people of Boston."

3. The people of Boston react...

Buzzfeed revealed the acts of kindness that took place following the tragedy, including Boston residents opening up their homes and offering refreshments to marathon runners.

Celebrities from Justin Timberlake to Victoria Beckham tweeted their condolences. Lindsay Lohan said, “Sending prayers to everyone who was/is at the #bostonmarathon” and Lea Michele tweeted, “Sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone in Boston right now…”

American Red Cross thanked volunteer blood donors for their generosity, but there is already enough blood to meet demand.
