Today is the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls (congrats guys). The teen movie starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried was released a whole decade ago on 30 April 2004.
The film is arguably one of the most quoted on social media right now. We're pretty certain you can't go a day without seeing a tweet of the likes of 'You can't sit with us', 'On Wednesdays we wear pink' or 'Danny DeVito, I love your work!'.
What's especially interesting about Mean Girls, is that even though teen flicks like Bring It On, Heathers and Clueless have equal (if not greater) cult status, we don't talk about them on social media as much. Don't believe me? There's more than a million posts on Instagram with the hashtag #meangirls meanwhile there's only 300,000 labelled #clueless.
Charlie Lyne, director of documentary Beyond Clueless and teen movie buff, reckons that what makes Mean Girls so enduring is the casting.
'It's so rare to find a teen movie without a single weak link in the cast — no wonder given that they're often full of young, inexperienced actors getting their first big break,' he says. 'Everyone in Mean Girls is so perfectly placed that it was pretty much inevitable that Lohan, McAdams, Seyfried and so on would become permanently associated with their characters from the film.'
While it might not have been a runaway success when it was first released - with pretty much no celebrity attendees at its UK premiere (except Ruby Wax and her kids) - Mean Girls was a social media phenomenon waiting to happen. Tina Fey's masterpiece is totally honest about teen life, full of irony and awkward humour and completely and utterly quotable. It's basically the Jennifer Lawrence of movies.
Nowadays we're all obsessed with talk of sequels, reunions and potential musicals. Here's 10 things that wouldn't exist without Mean Girls.
