What Maisie Knew is a brilliant and heart-breaking piece of film making. Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan star as a couple going through a separation and we see their disintegration as a unit in brutal detail through the eyes of their 7 year-old daughter (the ‘Maisie’ of the title). Although based on a Henry James novel from 1897, the film is set in contemporary New York City.
Our film critic, Charles Gant, wrote of the film: “a winning performance by young Onata Aprile tugs the heartstrings in US indie What Maisie Knew, a Henry James update that skewers self-involvement as a peculiarly modern malaise. As divorced parents Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan drift away, you’ll root for little Maisie’s second chance at happiness.”
Interesting facts: Evan Rachel Wood was slated to play the part of Margo (it went to Joanna Vanderham). Also, Julianne Moore said she based her character – the erratic rockstar Susanna - on Courtney Love and Patti Smith. Confusingly though, Julianne's Susanna covers songs by The Kills in the film.
