She's the gold-medal winning Olympian who emerged from London 2012 as Britain's heroine after taking gold in the heptathlon. Since then Jessica Ennis-Hill has found plenty to keep herself busy, including... getting married! We caught up with her to see how she's faring a year on from her triumphant win.
Grazia Daily: Congratulations on your wedding…
Jessica Ennis-Hill: Thank you!
Grazia Daily: Your Monique Lhullier wedding dress was stunning - how did you pick it?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I tried loads of different dresses on with my bridesmaids, friends and mum, and had in my head that I was going to have a certain style. But when I tried it on it was nice, but it didn’t really flatter my figure. Then I tried my dress on and I just loved it from the moment I put it on.
Grazia Daily: So love at first sight?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: Yeah! Everyone said you just know when you try the dress on that it’s for you, and I definitely did with that one.
Grazia Daily: Did everything go to plan on the day?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I honestly wouldn't have changed anything. It was just perfect! I was worried about the weather – the weather forecast was torrential rain all day it just got worse and worse as we got closer. But on the day it stayed really dry and there was no rain. Nothing that I was aware of went wrong! It was brilliant.
Grazia Daily: You weren’t planning your wedding during the Olympics were you?!
Jessica Ennis-Hill: Not during the actual time, we were engaged for two and a half years before we got married so I planned it kind of last year and did little bits around the Olympics just to have a bit of a distraction from all the stress of competing.
Grazia Daily: How are you feeling a year on from the Olympics?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I can’t believe it’s been a year it’s gone so quick! It was a brilliant year. Obviously some exciting things have happened since like getting married so it’s been really good fun. But yeah, I just can’t believe it’s been a year!
Grazia Daily: Are you jealous of Brazil getting it next?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I think Brazil will be amazing-there'll be that whole carnival feeling as well which will be great. I’m really hoping to be there, that’s my long time goal that I’m going to work towards. So hopefully I can experience it!
Grazia Daily: You had an injury recently are you doing better now?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: Yes it’s on the mend, but I’m still needing to take it day by day and working with my medical team back home in Sheffield to get it [her ankle] where it needs to be for the Games Anniversary next week. The World Championships are next month too so it’s a bit of a race against time!
Grazia Daily: So what does a general day entail for you?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I normally train 6 days a week. I get up about 7/7:30am and do a training session in the morning, come back for lunch and have a break then go back for a session in the afternoon. I have a physio or massage twice a week. And then one day off a week to recover and do what I want to do really, just normal things!
Grazia Daily: What sort of things do you do on days off?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: It’s nice to catch up with friends and go out for lunch, do a bit of shopping. I watch a lot of boxsets. At the moment I’ve just finished watching The Sopranos with my husband because he absolutely loves it. I absolutely loved it. We’ve also just started watching Breaking Bad which everyone says is amazing so we’re just getting into that. I’m struggling with it a bit but we’re going to stick with it and see how it goes.
Grazia Daily: Back to your fashion – you wear a lot of Victoria Beckham dresses - have you met VB before?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: We were supposed to meet a couple of times but I was either in America and she was in London and it didn’t work out. I’d definitely love to meet her. I’ve had some gorgeous dresses that she’s made. The red one at Sports Personality of the year was a stunning, stunning dress so it was great to wear that.
Grazia Daily: Can you tell us some of your favourite designers?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: Victoria Beckham definitely, Antonio Berardi, I like lots of Stella McCartney's stuff that she’s done, and Alexander McQueen. Omega for watches are amazing too. But I also like high street stuff as well like Reiss and French Connection.
Grazia Daily: If you could raid anybody’s wardrobe who would it be?
Jessica Ennis-Hill: I think Miranda Kerr always looks really nice; she’s got great style. I don’t think her clothes would work for me though because she’s got lovely long legs and is so tall! I think Jennifer Anniston always looks gorgeous and I really like Jessica Alba as well.
