Wednesday, 17 July 2013: UPDATE

Cory Monteith died from a drug and alcohol overdose, it has been confirmed. In a statement released by the coroner's office in British Columbia, it was revealed that a post-mortem examination had determined 'a mixed-drug toxicity involving heroin and alcohol' was the cause of death. Monteith is also thought to have been alone when he died as video footage and other evidence suggests he returned to his room at the Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver by himself in the early hours of Saturday morning, after spending the evening with friends.

A representative for Lea Michele issued another statement to People. 'Lea is deeply grateful for all the love and support she's received from family, friends, and fans. Since Cory's passing, Lea has been grieving alongside his family and making appropriate arrangements with them. They are supporting each other as they endure this profound loss together. We continue to ask the media to respect the privacy of Lea and Cory's family.'

Sad news has reached Grazia HQ this morning: Cory Monteith has been found dead has died aged 31. The 'Glee' star was found at noon at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver when staff went to check on him because he didn’t check out on time. He had been dead for several hours.

Acting Chief Doug LePard told a news conference, 'There were others with Mr Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died.' No cause of death has yet been revealed for the actor's sudden death, though no foul play is suspected. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

Monteith, who played Finn Hudson on the TV show, was dating his fellow 'Glee' star Lea Michele. A representative for the actress told People: 'We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea's privacy during this devastating time.' Cory voluntarily checked himself into a treatment center back in April, admitting he had substance abuse issues. It was his second time in treatment and the actor had been open about his struggles in the past.

The shock of his death is still reverberating among costars, friends and the acting community who are flooding Twitter with tributes. The first of Monteith's Glee costars to react was Mark Salling, who simply tweeted, 'no'. Kim Kardashian broke her post-pregnancy silence to send 'prayers for his family' while Rumer Willis commented on what 'a talented and sweet guy' he was.

Taylor Swift, who reportedly dated the actor in 2010, simply said she was 'speechless' and 'for the worst reason' while Gwyneth Paltrow, who appeared on the show, released a moving statement in tribute. 'Cory was a sweet and talented man. My heart breaks for Lea and the entire Glee family,' said the actress. Rest in peace, Cory.
