Still struggling to wave goodbye to Bella and Edward? Us too. And although we’ll no doubt look back and cringe, Twilight will forever be in our hearts. So, what’s next? Well The Mortal Instruments if this new trailer is anything to go by.
Based on the science-fiction-meets-fantasy five book series by Cassandra Clare, The Mortal Instruments definitely has all the elements that made the Twilight films our ultimate guilty-pleasure. For starters, the one minute forty-seven second trailer is all angsty and dark from the off. New York City is plunged in to an eerie darkness. And, if you thought that very proper British voice sounded familiar then it definitely does - belonging to none other than Mad Men’s Lane Pryce (Jared Harris).
There’s also an innocent-looking female protagonist in Lily Cole who plays Clary Fray in the film. She will no doubt be led astray by menacing-looking, leather jacket wearing bad boy, Jace Herondale (Jamie Campbell Bower). Or something. But there’s a Sixth Sense-style twist, seemingly Clary’s the only one who can see Jace. Well that’s interesting. And it’s because she’s a Shadowhunter (‘half angel, half human’) rather than a mundane (human) like us mere mortals. What does that even mean? Only a trip to the cinema next year will tell. Add in plenty of impromptu good vs. evil demon slaying (including a very cool scene with a flamethrower) and we’re pretty much smitten with The Mortal Instruments.
This is all very exciting, but do we think Edward Cullen is mourning the loss of our love? Er, probs not if THIS is anything to go by.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is out next year.
