2013 Golden Globe Awards: Here's Who We've Got Our Bets On

We’re high fiving a million angels right now thinking about The Dream Team (Fey and Poehler) hosting The Golden Globes again. Can they beat their previous gags-per-minute total from last time? We’ll have to wait and see - the ceremony takes place on 12th January. Yes, TEN days! So while the excitement brews, here's who we’re backing for the win...

1. Best Peformance By An Actress In A Motion Picture- Drama

Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine

Sandra Bullock, Gravity

Judi Dench, Philomena

Emma Thompson, Saving Mr Banks

Kate Winslet, Labor Day

Our Hot Tip: Cate Blanchett.

She’s been nominated scores of times, winning twice (in 1999 for her turn as the highly strung monarch in Elizabeth and in 2008 when she played Bob Dylan in I’m Not Here). Cate's brilliantly multi-layer performance in Blue Jasmine deserves a nod though as we see her go full on Tennessee Williams, although she faces stiff competition from Judi Dench and her heartbreaking performances as Philomena.

2. Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture- Comedy Or Musical

Amy Adams, American Hustle

Julie Delpy, Before Midnight

Greta Gerwig, Francis Ha

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Enough Said

Meryl Streep, August: Osage County

Our Hot Tip: Greta Gerwig.

In a film which she co-wrote, Frances Ha is a beautifully put together film that owes a debt to both the French New Wave movement and middle-period Woody Allen. In the lead role, Greta mixes the melancholic with an awkwardly comic sensibility effortlessly. And she does a bit of dance in it too.

3. Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role In A Motion Picture

Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine

Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle

Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave

Julia Roberts, August: Osage County

June Squibb, Nebraska

Our Hot Tip: Lupita Nyong’o.

12 Years A Slave will leave you emotionally drained, this is thanks in part to Lupita Nyong’o’s Patsey. Lupita brings a desperate innocence to the role as the audience travels with her through various emotional and personal indignities. Breathtaking.

4. Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series – Drama

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Taylor Schilling, Orange Is The New Black

Kerry Washington, Scandal

Robin Wright, House Of Cards

Out Hot Tip: Taylor Schilling.

In OITNB Taylor Schilling’s Piper changes from bright eyed hipster-yuppie type to emotionally beaten down, indentikit inmate whose life on the outside is turned inside out on the inside. In a show with great ensemble acting, Taylor’s note perfect performance pricks with an emotional honesty that deserves award recognition.

5. Best Performance By An Actress In A Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton & Taylor

Rebecca Ferguson, The White Queen

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Coven

Helen Mirren, Phil Spector

Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake

Our Hot Tip: Helena Bonham Carter.

I mean you only need to take a look at Lindsay Lohan’s Liz & Dick to see how not to play Elizabeth Taylor. Helena Bonham Carter’s late life portrait of Elizabeth does, on the other hand, carry with it a sense of ballast and the feeling of time running out as tragedy looming on the horizon.
