July: The 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The Queen sky-diving! David Beckham in a speedboat! JK Rowling reading! The 2012 [a href="/fashion/archive/2012/07/27/grazias-style-director-paula-reed-gives-her-verdict-on-the-olympics-kits--rwanda.htm">Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was a feast for the eyes[/a], wasn't it? As well as the dancing, the singing and all that waving, the spectacle gave us the opportunity to coo over the outfits of some our favourite Brits, from Kate Middleton to Samantha Cameron as well as the Olympic kits from the all-important athletes.
August: Boris hangs in there
[a href="/conversation/archive/2012/08/02/london-mayor-boris-johnson-goes-viral.htm">Boris Johnson was so eager to celebrate Team GB's first gold medal[/a], he took to a zip wire in East London's Victoria Park. Only it didn't go to plan. The Mayor of London soon lost momentum on it, getting stuck and dangling over a crowd of onlookers for several minutes.
August: Ennis wins gold
The 4 August was [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/08/06/today-s-london-olympic-s-2012-hero--jessica-ennis--mo-farah--andy-murray--it-s-a.htm">dubbed ‘Super Saturday’ as Team GB bagged six gold medals[/a] at the 2012 London Olympic Games. August: Miley gets the chop
A haircut's a haircut right? Not it you're Miley Cyrus. When [a href="/beauty/archive/2012/08/13/omg-check-out-the-pictures-of-miley-cyrus-chopping-her-hair-into-a-pixie-cut.htm">she chopped off her locks in favour of a bleached pixie crop[/a] in August, it spared worldwide debate.
September: Fashion baby
Over the past year, Little Miss Harper Beckham has established herself as a toddler of taste, wearing Chloé, Burberry and Stella McCartney and [a href="/fashion/archive/2012/10/03/frow-families--jennifer-lopez--solange-knowles-and-victoria-beckham-lead-bring-k.htm">sitting front row at mummy Victoria's New York Fashion Week catwalk presentation[/a] in September.
September: Jubilee tour
All eyes were on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their tour of the Far East in September, particularly due to [a href="/fashion/archive/2012/09/21/kate-middletons-jubilee-tour-wardrobe--alexander-mcqueen--erdem--mulberry-and-ma.htm">Kate's 13K wardrobe[/a]. But as well as fierce fashion scrutiny, the DOC got caught right in the middle of a right Royal scandal as [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/09/14/kate-middleton-saddened-by-news-that-a-french-magazine-have-published-topless-ph.htm">nude photographs taken without the couple’s knowledge[/a] whilst holidaying in France were published by a French magazine, prompting the palace to take action.
October: Hurricane Sandy
She crossed 24 US States, causing an estimated $80 billion in damage and, on 29 October, [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/10/30/how-to-keep-your-spirits-up-in-a-hurricane--by-the-residents-of-new-york.htm">Hurricane Sandy brought New York to a standstill[/a]. The storm surge flooded the city, cutting off power in and around the area - and bringing New York's stock exchange to a standing halt for the first time since 9/11.
October: Gangnam Style
Who'd have predicted that one man in a tux [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/11/07/zara-philips-does-gangnam-style.htm">pretending to ride and imaginary horse[/a] would become the most watched YouTube video of all time? Not us!
October: Chanel's Hula Hoop beach tote
[a href="/fashion/archive/2012/11/02/chanel-press-day-s-s-2013---we-try-the-hula-hoop-beach-bag-and-boy-brick-clutch.htm">The Chanel S/S 2013 catwalk show[/a] was remarkable for many reasons. Firstly we were astounded by the presence of a wind farm catwalk inside Paris’ Palais Royal - full sized turbines whirling menacingly around atop of a procession of models is definitely one way to catch our attention. Secondly for the most Instagram-ed bag of the season, the Hula Hoop beach tote – definitely a ‘dare you to wear’ fashion statement. For a more modest approach the hula bag is available in both medium and mini sizes - surprisingly practical and perfect for swinging around your wrist.
November: The US Election
The Presidential election debate gripped the nation and, well, just about every other nation too. Obama, we were behind you all the way. Though there was a moment just after [a href="/conversation/archive/2012/11/06/mitt-romney-does-gangnam-style-vs-barack-obamas-call-me-maybe--whats-your-favour.htm">we caught Mitt Romney Style[/a], the politician’s parody of Gangnam (sort of) that it could have gone either way. Election night was also the moment that we realised that [a href="/fashion/archive/2012/11/09/sasha-and-malia-obama-new-style-icons-the-first-daughters-wow-on-election-night.htm">Sasha and Malia Obama[/a] had grown into quite the budding style icons.
November: Victoria's Secret
Oh what a night! [a href="/fashion/archive/2012/11/08/victorias-secret-fashion-show-2012--rihanna--bras-and-justin-bieber.htm">The Victoria's Secret show[/a] is always one of the highlights of our calendar, but this year's catwalk extravaganza brought us extra cause for excitement. VS was blessed with two ultra-cool London girls, Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn who joined Victoria Secret's veterans Adriana Lima, Lily Aldridge and Miranda Kerr on the runway. And what soundtrack does a Victoria's Secret model require to strut her stuff? Live performances by Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars will do the trick.
November: Go Cara!
She's the model of the moment, the funnest face in fashion and the girl everyone wants to be mates with. We are, of course, talking about Cara Delevingne who scooped [a href="/fashion/news/model-cara-delevingne-ruled-the-runway-at-london-fashion-week--check-out-her-cat">the Model of the Year Award [/a]at the British Fashion Awards 2012 on 26 November.
December: Baby fever

Like the royal wedding before it, the birth of the royal baby will surely be one of 2013's biggest stories.
December: Newtown Shooting
When devastating news of a school shooting started to emerge, the world’s attention turned to the picturesque village of Newtown. On 14 December Adam Lanza shot his mother dead, before driving her car to the local elementary school where he killed 26 people – 20 of them children aged five or six. Later that day President Obama delivered an emotional response to the tragic event.
