Naomi Watts Says She Hopes Princes William and Harry Are ‘OK’ With Her Playing Princess Diana In Her New Film

From the perfectly quaffed blonde hair to the infamous clothes and jewellery, we’ve done more than one double take when we’ve seen Naomi Watts in character as Princess Diana while filming her latest movie. But the Hollywood actress has now spoken out about her decision to play such a controversial role and what attracted her to it.

‘I did struggle with the idea of doing it,’ she told the MailOnline.‘It’s definitely risky. But having said that, it’s a story that had to be told. It’s a piece of history.

The film will focus on the period in Diana’s life when she was in a secretive, two-year relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. Although the Princess tried to keep much of her life private, in reality she was very much in the public eye. ‘I went off and did some of my own research, and spoke to people who knew Diana,’ Naomi said. ‘There is so much information available, and one story conflicts with another, so you don’t know what source to trust. It was important for me to know what was true. I asked for proof, and wanted to know whether some things took place.’

As well as thoroughly researching the script, the crew have gone to great lengths to ensure that the physical transformation is as accurate as possible even using a prosthetic nose. But Naomi was keen to point out that her portrayal of Diana is ‘an interpretation’. ‘I’m not the same height. I don’t look like her, though we’ve tried our best with hair, make-up and clothes.’

While the film brings back fond memories, naturally those involved are concerned that it might be a little too close to home for some people. Speaking about Princes William and Harry, Naomi said, ‘I hope they’re ok with it.’ ‘We’re certainly not trying to upset the boys, although they’re men now.’

Well, if the pictures of her in character are anything to go by, we’re sure the Oscar-nominated actress will do Diana’s memory justice. But, we’re just going to have to wait until next year to find out…
