Last Thursday the original members of The Sugababes; Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy took the stage for their much anticipated comeback gig. It was totally amazing and made us think about why their comeback is poised for success.
1) The Siobhan Factor
When the Sugababes released their first single, Overload in 2000, Siobhan’s voice was the first thing we heard. Her distinctive falsetto chirped in about “skipping school”, feeling nervous around “The Boy” and generally conjuring up a realistic sucker punch of teenage angst. She departed the band in 2001, releasing two brilliant solo albums (Revolution In Me and Ghosts) which suggested that she was the one who brought the magic, alternative edge to their classic debut One Touch. Her reunion with Mutya and Keisha is the thing that’s making music nerds excited about the Sugababes again.
2) The New Songs
In the twilight of their career, The Sugababes’ quality control had severely dipped. Anyone remember the embarrassing Get Sexy, Wear My Kiss or Freedom? Well the less said about those the better. So it’s a huge surprise that their new single Flatline is such an anthem. It's the kind of song that feels both classic and tells you exactly what you need to know about the group of individuals who are singing it. The raft of new songs they played at their comeback gig suggested that there were loads more good stuff to come. Today, for example, sounds like the type of modern pop masterpiece Katy B put her name to...
3) The Ultimate Girlband
In the midst of identikit girlbands, The Sugababes spent a large part of their career maintaining their uniqueness and originality. Even after Siobhan departed, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan made unpredictable musical choices and gave the air of staunchly refusing to be anodyne popstars. It feels like MKS’ comeback is set to return to this place. Roll on their debut!
