Woah! The final season of Misfits is set to begin on e4 on Wednesday. But how will it all end? As we gear up to say goodbye to the revolutionary show, we speak to Nathan McMullen (Finn), Matt Stokoe (Alex) and Karla Crome (Jess) about the end, British Sci-Fi and that rumoured Misfits movie…
Were you surprised when you were told it was the end?
Karla: I don’t think any of us were surprised when we were told it was the end.
Nathan: I think five series are enough for any show to get across what they do.
Matt: Yea, we wanted it to finish with a high level of quality.
Karla: Also, we’re only in our mid 20’s so we wanted things to end and then maybe do something else with our careers. We want to shoot for the stars (others laugh).
So, do you have mixed feelings about it being the end?
Matt: I do feel sad but I don’t think I would have done anything differently. But going in we knew it was going to be the last series, so it wasn’t like having the carpet being pulled from under you. We tried to enjoy it as much as we could.
Nathan: The final day was really emotional. It was strange because this was a group of people that we had worked with for two years and there’s a collective feeling of ‘well, we’ve done it now.’
How did you celebrate?
Matt: We just got really drunk.
Karla: The wrap party was…interesting.
What’s your proudest moment from the show?
Karla: Just getting the job in the first place! I was a huge fan of the show and so were my friends and family. It was the first job where I could turn around and talk to them about and they knew what I was talking about.
What do you think the lasting legacy of the show will be?
Nathan: I think it was a real frontrunner in terms of British Sci-Fi. Generally I think that it’s an underused genre in terms of British television. Historically we’ve been fascinated with witches and monsters so it felt like a continuation of that. I think in Misfits we produced a show which could compete with a global audience. We managed to turn superheroes into normal people which hadn’t been done before.
No spoilers but did your characters end up in the way you wanted them to?
Nathan: It was a bit of a surprise to find out what happens but it is what it is. I don’t think any of us were displeased with how it ends. It ends on quite an open note so it doesn’t feel like the end. It finishes with a sense of ‘what next?’
Oooh, exciting! So what can you tell us about the rumoured film adaptation?
Nathan: We don’t know anything!
Matt: We’re the last to find out!
Nathan: In my dream scenario the film is just called ‘ALEX!’
Matt: If the fans want it then it could happen…
