We may be mourning the end of Downton Abbey series three here in the UK but spare a thought for our poor American friends who have to wait until 6 January before it airs in the US. Not if you’re the First Lady though. That’s right, hot off the heels of her hubby’s re-election and with a bit of spare time on her hands now that the campaign trail is over, Michelle Obama is such a huge fan of the show that she begged ITV to get a sneaky peak at the new series ahead of her fellow countrymen.
We already knew that the Obama’s were big fans of the show after the President invited Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern who play Lord and Lady Grantham to a dinner at the White House when David Cameron paid a state visit back in March. But it seems that Mrs O just couldn’t wait until January to see if Lady Mary finally weds her beloved Matthew.
Sources at ITV told The Sun, ‘We’d heard the Obamas liked to watch it but we were very surprised when someone from the First Lady’s office got in touch asking for the series. They were very polite and we were more than happy to sort out some DVDs for them to send over.’
Now given that she’s married to the President and all, we’d like to think that Michelle is pretty good at keeping secrets. Fans of the show will know that *spoiler alert* youngest Crawley daughter Lady Sybil passed away this series shortly after giving birth – something that ITV successfully managed to keep under wraps for British viewers. And it looks like we’re not the only ones hoping the White House residents keep schtum as they said, ‘Obviously we hope they keep the spoilers to themselves as our US fans may not know about... well, you know what!’
She’s been faithfully by her husband’s side throughout his campaign for re-election so we definitely think Mobama deserves a little downtime with Downton Abbey, don’t you?
