Lena Dunham: Jezebel Made A 'Monumental Error In Their Approach To Feminism' By Publishing Unretouched Vogue Shoot

Lena Dunham [getty]

Lena Dunham has done a new interview with American sports fanatic Bill Simmons. It's over an hour long so we've broken down the best bits for you. Here's the five things we've learnt about Lena this morning...

1. She wasn't happy when Jezebel published her untouched Vogue pictures

American culture and gossip site Jezebel offered $10,000 for the unretouched pictures of Lena Dunham's February Vogue cover. When they eventually secured them, they published them on the site - whilst they had clearly believed that the images would have been heavily edited they hadn't been. Lena said of the move, 'That was messed up. I think Jezebel is really smart and funny, I think it's just like once you've been attacked that way it's hard to enjoy. It's hard to enjoy once you feel like they've made such a monumental error in their approach to feminism.' She added, 'It felt gross. I didn’t talk to the woman who did it directly, but I can’t imagine the reaction made her feel particularly great.'

2. Lena found her boyfriend on an celebrity 'Old Loves' tumblr

Lena Dunham is dating Fun guitarist Jack Antonoff, she's not his first famous love though in high school he dated Scarlett Johannson. Awkwardly for Lena she found pictures of them on her favourite blog oldloves.tumblr.com. 'The craziest thing that ever happened to me like Old Loves is my passion I check it like once a week, it’s like how I kick back on a Friday night – see what Old Loves has done and I was going through it and I saw my boyfriend and his girlfriend from high school,' she said, 'Scarlett Johannson, I know I shouldn’t spill that in a public forum but it’s… you can google it, you can see it. I’m not jealous, Howard Stern asked me if I was jealous – they were 17, it’s pretty sweet, I love looking at pictures of them. He’s beautiful, she’s beautiful but it was just so surreal to be looking through this blog that gives me so much pleasure and then there’s my boyfriend. I was like ‘my mind is going to explode.’ We imagine ours would have done too.

3. She was prettttyyy obsessed with Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon is like, pretty big news in America. He was also pretty big news to a teenage Lena - who was obsessed with him. Taking about her crushes she said, 'The biggest obsession like crazy was Jimmy Fallon which is so… now I’ve encountered him, I’ve been on his show but it’s like the way that I felt about Jimmy Fallon like if I missed the opening of SNL I would cry.' Going on to say, 'This was like 2000-2003, I was like 13-16 and I was just obsessed, on SNL if he would giggle that was like 1000 points to my heart I just loved him, I would make my Dad drive me places to see him live. I had an autograph from him on a napkin that I framed that I still have somewhere. The way I felt about him was unreasonable and when I met my boyfriend my Mum was like, ‘I love him, I hope you never break up with him, but I always thought you’d marry Jimmy Fallon.’

4. She used to lie about her designer clothes

Lena says now she couldn't 'give a sh*t' if her clothes are designer. But back in the day, she REALLY did. Speaking of how her Mum would buy her cheap shoes for bar mitzvah season, 'She bought me all these shoes at pay less like different fun pairs of shoes and because I was so... like now, I couldn't give a shit if my shoes came from Pay Less but I told everybody that they were Steve Madden and I like ripped the tags out because I wanted everybody to think that I had like 11 pairs of Steve Madden shoes.' Now she is a bit more relaxed, 'I have like a irreverent relationsip with fashion, I love clothes, but I don't care very much about best dressed, worst dressed, I get kind of a perverse pleasure out of being told I look horrible. I get designers I love to make me dresses I want to wear and whatever reaction I get I'm just stoked because I'm saving them all for hopefully my future daughter.'

5. She once got fired

Lena hasn't always been a massive success, she once got fired after just half a day on set. She said, 'I've never really played anyone but a version of myself. I got fired after the one day that I did on... fired might be a bit rough but I got sweetly dismissed from the one day I acted on Mildred Pierce the HBO mini series. They told me that it was a three day shoot and then half way through the first day they were like, 'We got what we needed.' I know I didn't do well because the producer on Mildred Pierce now works on Girls and she said to me she was auditioning extras in the basement to replace me because of that.' The concluded, 'That's how bad I was. I kind of knew, I had an agent and I'd had him for like a month and I called him and was like, 'I'm going to get fired,' and then it was like, 'I got fired.' Doesn't seem to have harmed your career too much Lena...
