In a revealing new interview Katy Perry has revealed how she had suicidal thoughts following the breakdown of her marriage to Russell Brand at the end of 2011.

Speaking to Billboard magazine about her song ‘By The Grace of God’, Katy spoke out about how down she felt. ‘That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, "Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?"’

The lyrics of the harrowing song, taken from her new album Prism, reveal that it was Katy’s sister who helped her out of her depression. ‘Lay on the bathroom floor/Couldn't take it anymore/By the grace of God/I looked in the mirror and decided to stay/Wasn't gonna let love take me out/I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water/Every morning, I finally see myself again/Universe calling my bluff,’ she sings.

Katy is now happily in a relationship with John Mayer, who she has been dating on and off for over a year. In the same interview she gushes about how clever he is, ‘He literally is a genius, as is evident from his song writing,’ she said, adding, ‘I always tell him, "Darling, you know I'm going to have to give your mind to science after you've passed, because we're going to have to understand how all these sparks work.’ Bit weird.

Katy’s revelations about her marriage came in the same week that Russell revealed that he is single after a brief romance with British socialite Jemima Khan. Russell said on stage whilst conducting his show Messiah Complex, ‘I'm currently single.’ Shortly after that he was getting up close and personal with some of his female fans... Well, you know what they say: if it ain’t broke…
