Jemima Kirke's Husband Loves Her 'Butt' - And 9 Other Things We've Learned From A Tour Of Her House

17 March 2014 by

1. She doesn't shoot Girls as much as you might think

'I don’t shoot Girls that often. Even when we’re filming, I only shoot a couple of times a week. This morning, like most mornings, my daughter, Rafaella, woke me up. I would never set an alarm—that would be too wishful.'

2. She's not that much of a cook

'I’m no chef, but if we need lunch or dinner I can whip something up. My son, Memphis, eats eggs with smoked salmon. He’s one. He eats everything. He’s massive.'

3. She paints in her basement

'Today the plan was to paint in our basement apartment. It was supposed to be a rental, but I begged my husband [Michael Mosberg] to give me a year using it as a studio.'

4. She's a closet romantic

'Mike and I got married to the song “Sea of Love.” The mermaid tattoo was a little tribute to that. He has lots that are tributes to me. When he gets any girls tattooed on him, he’s always like, “Can you make their butt bigger, and can you make the hair long?" '

5. She's not afraid to let her kids pick their room colours

'We trade off kids all the time, so here I had Rafa. Her room is really pink. It’s definitely got confidence, that pink. She doesn’t care. She’s three.'

6. She does Shabbat dinner with her husband Mike

'We do Shabbat sometimes. Mike went to Yeshiva law school. He’s super-Jew and super-corporate. That’s why I was so attracted to him when I met him: the contradiction.'

7. She loves chilling out and watching TV

'Here I was doing an interview with a woman from an art magazine in Amsterdam. Usually we have people over till about midnight, and then Mike and I hang out. We watch a movie or TV every night. He falls asleep, but I’m compulsive about it. I can’t not finish something'

8. She can't stand walking the dog in the cold

'Walking Rozy is such a bitch in the cold. He doesn’t even want to go. We just do it so he won’t sh*t in the house'

9. Move aside Bey: her husband loves her 'butt'

'Mike came in after my shower. Anytime he catches me naked he gives me a hug, but really he just wants to grab my butt.'

10. She gives her husband homemade tattoos

'He's [Mike] the best for stick-and-pokes, because he doesn’t give a shit what I give him. He has “eat me” on his calf from me.'

Enigmatic, enchanting, ethereal... There are many words we could use to describe the actress Jemima Kirke's Girls character, Jessa. And a lot of them we can adopt pretty easily for Jemima herself too. So you can imagine our surprise and delight when we woke to find that the New York Magazine has gone behind the scenes to photograph Jemima, via a fascinating nosy around the actress's home and her cool Brooklyn neighbourhood. Onscreen Jessa defines world traveller and 'free spirit' with no fixed home or abode. What could her real place possibly look like?

Thankfully, it's just as wonderfully bohemian as we imagined. See the vintage furniture, beautiful boudoirs and a basement apartment art studio we've fallen just a little bit in love with. Some things may surprise (like the song Jemima and her husband chose to get married to); others not quite so much (Jemima's more at home painting in the basement than cooking a three course meal for starters). And did we mention she gives her husband homemade tattoos? You can't say she's not fearless!

But the whole thing is best seen as dictated by Jemima herself, so click through the gallery above for a peek inside her New York home - and be prepared to get in the mood for a little feng shui. For the full shoot, go to New York Magazine.
