As Downton Abbey Returns Here's What We Can Expect From Series 4

Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over - as the brand-new series of Downton Abbey kicks off tonight at 9pm on ITV. And what better way to celebrate than to examine the evidence of what we might expect from the show over the coming weeks? Released earlier this month, the trailer for series four seems to revolve around two central themes: ‘kissing’ and ‘crying’.

Fans of Downton will remember that the last time we saw the characters was in the Christmas episode: Lady Mary had just given birth to a son named George when her husband Matthew Crawley was involved in a car accident. From the trailer, it is probably easily and sadly clear to surmise that he did not recover. But what else do we know about the new series?

Here’s a roundup of the news and rumours so far…

1. Tom and Mary are to be friends…

When Lady Sybil started dating the chauffeur, Tom, the Granthams were none too happy - but after her untimely death, and Matthew’s, it’s thought that Mary and Tom finally find something to bond over. Albeit something very sad.

2. The show will have its first black character…

Gary Carr will play jazz singer Jack Ross in the new series. According to ruumors, he will be spending a lot of time with Rose – the naughty Crawley cousin.

3. Tom will have a new romance…

As well as striking up a firm friendship with Mary, it’s thought that Tom will find himself a new woman in the fourth series. It’s widely thought that he will start dating the new nanny… Ooer.

4. Lady Mary might move on…

Okay, so we don’t want to think of Mary without Matthew - but apparently in the fourth series there ‘may’ be a new love interest in store for her in the shape of Lord Anthony Gillingham, played by the gorgeous Tom Cullen.

5. P-Diddy is not going to cameo…

Despite loving the show so much that he worked himself into a Downton video, Diddy is not actually going to be starring in the show. What a shame.
