Queen of angsty teen edge Sofia Coppola is turning her attentions to fairytales this year, trading her usual gritty, raunchy movies for something a lot more child-friendly. The director behind The Bling Ring, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides has been revealed as working on a live-action version of fairytale The Little Mermaid.
To celebrate the director taking on the story, the hilarious folk at Funny Or Die have put together a spoof of how the movie might turn out.
Starring Anna Sophia Robb as naive Ariel and American Horror Story actor Evan Peters as rebellious teen Prince Eric, the two minute video is set in the 'Shellteau Marmont'. It has all the trademarks of a Coppola movie: there's moody lingering shots, a killer soundtrack, a broody leading man and some 'we're having the best time ever' montages.
Plus there's some killer scenes. The trailer opens with Ariel texting Flounder about being bored and at one point Eric tells Ariel 'there something fishy about you'. Our highlight? Ariel pondering to herself 'someone once said the seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake. A crab said that'.
In reality, Coppola's not going to have to much to give the story an dark twist. The original story is actually a creepy tale about a mermaid making a deal with the devil (Ursula) so she can grow legs and dance with a prince on the land. Rather than marry her (like in the Disney version), the mermaid's prince makes her dance until her feet bleed and marries someone else. There's no happy ending. (Sob!)
The cast of the actual movie hasn't been announced yet, but let's take a look at some potential Ariels...
