2013 was a brilliantly eclectic year in music, with excellent albums from the likes of Janelle Monae, Neko Case, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and (a leaked one from) Jai Paul. But here's our definitive Top 5 Albums Of 2013.
5) NYPC – NYPC
Their third (and best) album found, NYPC perfecting the noir-ish glamour of their electropop with a fresh eye for the succinct lyrical couplet and a new sense of melodic sparseness. It meant that repeated listens were very necessary.
4) Disclosure – Settle
Settle felt like the realization of a musical movement – as the Disclosure brothers honed in on their melding of Chicago House, shades of techno and R&B pop. The guest stars were expertly judged – Aluna from AlunaGeorge, Sam Smith and more- to create an album which felt like a perfect summation of 2013 in pop.
3) Factory Floor – Factory Floor
After seven years of waiting the industrial dance trio created an immense sprawling (and long awaited) album which was as futuristic as Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories was retro. Released on the DFA label, there distant echoes of early New Order, The Knife and the Cold Wave movement but the whole thing felt mind frazzlingly current and alive.
2) Kanye West –Yeezus
Kanye went full on minimalist electro with his latest album, featuring production from Daft Punk, Hudson Mowhawke and more. Long gone were the baroque arrangements and victimized tone of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and in its place were super dark, whiplash electro dispatches from the dark side (of fame).
1) David Bowie – The Next Day
Bowie’s first album in a decade reminded us what a unique musical force he was. The Next Day was an album which touched gently on his past personas all the while looking forward and embracing his new status as role as elder statesman of rock. From the spectral reminders of his past on the cover and Where Are We Now to the alien horror of Love Is Lost, it was the sound of a icon returning with all guns blazing.
