The foundations of our universe were rocked to their core today when it was reported that Katie Holmes was almost cast as Piper in Orange Is The New Black – aka the Netflix drama that we’ve spent more time with in the last year than our own families.
The show’s creator Jenji Kohan told E! Online that she met with Katie about her playing the part that eventually went to Taylor Schilling. '[Katie] had other things to do. And also in the beginning, no one knew what this was’, explained Jenji. But that hasn’t stopped rumours that Katie might have an OITNB cameo at a later date.
This revelation got us thinking about other actors who almost won roles made famous by someone else…
1. Jennifer Lawrence in Twilight
Before coming to fame in her own young adult franchise, Hunger Games, J-Law was almost cast as Bella Swan in Twilight. She lost out to Kristen Stewart, but hasn’t exactly been short of work since.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio in American Psycho
Everyone’s favourite baby-faced pin-up almost played one of literature’s most chilling serial killers in the big-screen adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho. Leo left the project after issues with the script and campaigning from feminist groups, and was replaced by Christian Bale.
3. Sandra Bullock in Million Dollar Baby
Sandra pulled out of the role of Maggie Fitzgerald after delays with the production. She was replaced by Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for the part, while Sandra starred in the ever-so slightly less critically acclaimed Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous.
4. Gwyneth Paltrow in Titanic
Gwyn almost played Rose, the role made famous by Kate Winslet. Our childhood’s would have been very (OK, marginally) different if she had.
5. Britney Spears in The Notebook
Britney was rumoured to have auditioned for the part of Ally, alongside Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon, but Rachel McAdams won the role. Still, at least Britney got to star in, err, Crossroads.
